The prologue of Romeo and Juliet calls the title characters “star-crossed lovers”—and the stars do seem to conspire against these young lovers.The legendary tragedy is about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. A friar secretly marries them, hoping to end the feud but the plan quickly spirals from high spirited to even higher stakes. It was among Shakespeare’s most popular plays during his lifetime.
