"Affection is a coal that must be cooled; Else, suffered, it will set the heart on fire."
Venus and Adonis is a narrative poem and early work of Shakespeare's written in the style of Ovid. Throughout the amatory and risqué work, Shakespeare explores the multi-faceted nature of love. As David Bevington states in his introduction in Shakespeare: The Poems, "the poem is a tour de force of stylized poetic technique" which helped to earn Shakespeare a reputation as a formidable poet in England.
