Ages of Shakespeare

Created by John S. Davies

April 13th and 14th, 2012

Ages of Shakespeare examines the evolution of Shakespearean acting--from the more measured, lyrical approach of the late 19th century to the faster, more vernacular speech of today--using recordings, video and live actors. As the center of the entertainment and cultural universe shifted westward from London to New York; as more and newer kinds of recording technology became available; as our ears became attuned to the cacophonous jangle of modern life, styles of Shakespearean acting changed to keep up. We'll compare the sounds of different eras through recordings and with live actors and maybe we'll ask you (yes you!) to say a little piece...
