Lysander and Hermia are in love. Hermia’s father, Egeus, wants her to marry Demetrius. Helena is in love with Demetrius, but Demetrius loves Hermia. Theseus gives Hermia a month to marry Demetrius or be faced with a choice of death or becoming a nun. All four run away to the forest. Meanwhile, a group of craftsmen meet in the forest to rehearse “Pyramus and Thisbe,” their play for Theseus’ wedding. Also meanwhile, Oberon and Titania, the king and queen of the fairies, argue over a stolen changeling. Titania refuses to concede to her husband, so Oberon has his servant Puck enchant Titania with the juice of a special flower to cause her to fall in love with whomever she sees first upon awaking. He is also told to put the juice on Demetrius’ eyes while he’s at it. Puck, however, mistakes Lysander for Demetrius and casts a spell on the wrong gentleman. Lysander falls in love with the wrong person, and Titania falls in love with a donkey. The comedy ensues!
